Margaret Edith Weis sa narodila 16. marca 1948 v meste Independence, štát Missouri, USA. Študovala umenie a neskôr kreatívne písanie a literatúru na Missouriskej univerzite, ktorú ukončila v roku 1970, a v súčasnosti žije v južnom Wisconsine v dome, ktorý pôvodne slúžil ako stodola.
V roku 1999 ju časopis Pyramid zaradil do rebríčka najvplyvnejších osôb tisícročia, minimálne čo sa týka sveta počítačových adventure hier. Riadi dve vydavateľské firmy – Sovereign Press, Inc. A Margareth Weis Productions, Ltd. Napriek tomu, že je autorkou fantasy románov, tvrdí, že tento žáner vôbec nečíta. Je matkou dvoch detí. Dcéra sa volá Elizabeth a syn David (už nežije). Obe sú z prvého manželstva. Jej druhým manželom bol kanadský spisovateľ Don Perrin, ale neskôr sa rozviedli.
V roku 1993 Weisovej diagnostikovali rakovinu prsníka, no podarilo sa jej chorobu poraziť. Jedným z jej obľúbených príbehov je Dickensova Vianočná koleda. Písaniu sa aktívne venuje od roku 1984. New York Times označil vyše tridsať jej kníh za bestsellery.
Weisová tvrdí, že fantasy a sci-fi knihy nečíta, takže by bolo zbytočné hľadať autorov týchto žánrov, ktorí by mali vplyv na jej diela. Oveľa dôležitejší faktor v jej tvorbe je imaginárny svet Dragonlance a Dungeons & Dragons. V niektorých románoch, ktoré sa odohrávajú v ďalekej budúcnosti, je cítiť mierny vplyv ságy Hviezdnych vojen.
